Green Tag Go: The 5-Point Scaffold Safety Check

Description
Course Overview

Green Tag Go: The 5-Point Scaffold Safety Check is a practical safety awareness course designed for workers, supervisors, and safety personnel operating in oil & gas and industrial construction environments. The course introduces a simple, standardized 5-point scaffold safety check used to verify whether a scaffold is safe for use before access is permitted.

Participants will learn how to recognize compliant “green-tagged” scaffolds, identify common scaffold hazards, and understand their individual responsibilities in preventing falls, collapses, and dropped-object incidents. The course emphasizes real-world site conditions, regulatory expectations, and daily pre-use checks aligned with major contractor and client safety standards.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Explain the purpose and meaning of a green scaffold tag

Identify the five critical safety points required before using a scaffold

Conduct a basic visual scaffold safety check prior to access

Recognize unsafe conditions that require stopping work and reporting

Understand worker, supervisor, and scaffolding team responsibilities related to scaffold safety

5-Part Course Outline
Part 1 – Why Scaffold Safety Matters

Common scaffold-related incidents in oil & gas and industrial construction

Consequences of unsafe scaffold use (injury, fatality, shutdowns)

Legal, client, and company safety expectations

The worker’s role in preventing scaffold accidents

Part 2 – Understanding the Green Tag System

What a green tag means (and what it does not mean)

Differences between green, yellow, and red tags

Who is authorized to install, inspect, and tag scaffolds

When a green tag becomes invalid

Part 3 – The 5-Point Scaffold Safety Check

A simple, memorable checklist workers must verify before use:

Foundation & Stability – Base plates, sole boards, level and secure footing

Structure & Access – Frames, braces, ladders, and stair access correctly installed

Platforms & Planking – Fully decked, secured, no gaps or damaged boards

Guardrails & Toe Boards – Complete edge protection on all open sides

Tag & Load Rating – Valid green tag, correct load class, no unauthorized changes

Part 4 – Stop Work & Reporting Unsafe Scaffolds

Warning signs that a scaffold is unsafe despite a green tag

Environmental impacts (wind, sand, weather, vibration)

Stop Work Authority: when and how to use it

Proper reporting channels and documentation

Part 5 – Roles, Responsibilities & Safe Work Practice

Worker responsibilities before and during scaffold use

Supervisor and foreman oversight expectations

Coordination with scaffolding teams and safety officers

Reinforcing a strong scaffold safety culture on site
